The timely and safe administration of multiple intravenous (IV) medicines, fluids, electrolytes, blood products or parenteral nutrition can present difficult challenges for nurses.
If a medicine is compatible with an IV fluid or another medicine, it means it can be given into the same line at the same time. Some patients have multiple lines in place so that different medicines can be given into separate lines, however, many only have one line and questions about compatibility of medicines and fluids will arise. As a pharmacist it is crucial that you are able to advise nursing and medical staff on how to administer multiple IV medicines to patients in the safest possible ways.
